About Real Rugby – In December 2011 I had to opportunity, through friends, to visit Danie Gerber and his family at their home in Port Elizabeth during the weekend of the World 7’s Series. Growing up, Danie was a hero of mine and to this day I still think he is the greatest Springbok ever. During the weekend Danie showed me a DVD that someone made of his career, but he wasn’t interested in any interviews or random clips, he just wanted footage of his tries! Without hesitation I said “Danie, I will make you the best DVD of your career ever”. I didn’t know how to edit a video, I didn’t have the equipment and I had limited footage on old VHS tapes. But I made a promise to a legend. So I applied for a credit card card and bought my first PC. Six months later at a golf day, I gave Danie 10 copies of a new DVD, with footage he hadn’t seen before.

When I was a youngster, my friends would watch He-Man or K-TV. I watched my dad’s rugby videos. Over and over and over again to the point where I would recall which players scored tries in which games.

I was brought up in a house where only two teams mattered, The Springboks and Northern Transvaal, and when me and my dad went to Loftus on Saturdays, my mom had the task of recording the game. Through the years me and my dad built up quite a video collection, but the technology was already replaced by digital formats and streaming services like YouTube. With a little bit of research I learnt how to convert VHS tapes to a digital format. As my library grew, I realized I am doing something good for the rugby community in South Africa. I’m preserving this old footage and I decided to share it with the public.

In 2015, I started Real Rugby on YouTube. I quickly gained a lot of support and started to get in contact with more and more people who were willing to share videos with me, including the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, Rassie Erasmus and Ollie le Roux among others.

Today, I believe I have the biggest private rugby video collection in South Africa with over 17 000 subscribers  on YouTube, and over 9 000 fans on Facebook.

I now have a platform to bring more to the rugby community and this is what this site is about. We want to give rugby lovers a unique rugby experience where you can watch our classic library of videos, read the latest news, read articles written by me and other contributors and even test your rugby knowledge.

This site is for the Real Rugby fan!
